- Subject: [*] MacAssist - Live Assist Digital Audio Software
-
- MacAssist is a programming project I decided to undertake near the end of
- Spring 1994 to perform the sequencing needed for "Live Assist" radio.
-
- MacAssist allows the user to select items to be played (AIFF files in this
- version) from a specific group of folders set up ahead of time. This way the
- user doesn't need to navigate through folders to get to the items they want to
- play; only folders of interest are displayed. Items may then be played
- immediately, assigned to one of four hot keys (played when the button is
- pressed) or added to a play list. The play list is a queue of items to be
- played sequentially. Once you start the queue playing, the software takes care
- of seguing from one item to the next; just sit back and watch the queue timer
- count down. For each item the user can define default times for overlapping
- between the previous and next item. Breaks can also be added to the queue to
- stop the sequence between items. Play lists can be saved and loaded again
- later. The number of items that can be playing simultaneously is limited by
- processor load, hard drive speed and memory available. MacAssist has no
- problem running in the background.

-
- MailConverter, a utility for creating Eudora-compatible mailboxes from
- disparate sources, including mail files and news files in most popular
- formats.
-
- New in 1.7
-
- 1. Mailbox windows, which allow convenient appending to existing Eudora
- mailboxes, either with drag+drop or by conventional file selection.
-
- 2. Remote drag+drop file conversion, via Anarchie.
-
- 3. New command, Tag File as Mailbox, which will set the type and creator of
- a file that's already in Eudora-compatible format (also available by
- dragging onto the icon).
-
- 4. For 7.5 users: changed the behavior of file dialogs so that it's no
- longer dependent on the Documents setting in the General Control panel.
-
- 5. Fixed a bug that could sometimes cause the preferences file to grow
- after each run (users of earlier versions might want to trash their old
- MailConverter Preferences if this file seems unusually large).

- I occasionally create line graphs in Excel, charting the behavior of
- children I'm following on various behavior and/or medication programs. I
- then save the graph as a PostScript file, then upload and print to my
- university's laser printer. The problem is that I end up with six or seven
- individual files to upload and manage, when I'd really like to have one
- large(r) file to upload and print. This is especially important if I use
- fonts not found on the university printer, such as Adobe Minion. Every
- time I create a PostScript document, it saves the font, adding at least 60k
- to the file size (depending on what variations of the font I use). If I
- have ten documents that use the exact same fonts, but have different
- information, can I somehow combine the ten PS files into one PS file? When
- I look at the PS file with QUED/m, I see that the font information is what
- takes up most of the file, not the actual information I want printed on the

-
- Any tips or suggestions concerning what to change, where to cut and paste,
- etc. would be greatly appreciated! I'm using Apple's LaserWriter driver
- 8.1.1 and the Digital Printserver 32 v48.3 PPD file, if that matters/helps.

- As many of you may know, if you use ARA to log onto a server, then create an
- alias of either the server or anything on it AND you LOCK the alias, if you
- dismount and shutdown ARA and double-click on the alias, ARA will
- automatically start up the connection and log you onto to the server. HOWEVER,
- unless you log in as GUEST, you have to enter a password (there is an option
- in ARA to "save password" but it's only valid for the ARA connection- not the
- AppleShare connection).
-
- My problem: I need to be able to make the ARA/AppleShare connection WITHOUT
- the password AND as a registered user. I thought of using MountAlias (which
- will mount a remote drive without your having to type in a password), but:
- a) I only have version 1.0 and, for some reason, it no longer works (no matter
- which folder I select in which the aliases are to be stored, it tells me that
- that folder is invalid)
- and
- b) I'm not sure it will work with ARA even if it did work.
-
- I've looked for a newer version but couldn't find one. So, if anyone has an
- idea how I can make an alias of a remote drive via ARA so that double-clicking
- on the alias logs me into the server without having to enter a password for
- either ARA or AppleShare, I would be most grateful...

- I've been afflicted with the same irritating problem for some months now

-
- I've got a cluster of Internet-related aliases in a folder on the startup

-
- Greetings fellow Mac-Persons
-
- As an Info-Mac Digest e-mail subscriber, I have been lurking about for
- nearly a year now, always reading, never posting, but occasionally
- smirking to myself, "ha! I knew that" when a particularly easy question
- is answered. (Sort of like watching Jeopardy) But I just had to respond
- to fellow-Virginian Al Bloom's query about removing disk label glue,
- since I have already fought that same battle.
-
- I'm a Government employee, meaning I have to try to do everything with
- practically nothing, so I've done quite a bit of disk recycling over the
- years. I've had very good luck with a product called De-Solv-it,
- manufactured by Orange-Sol, Inc., Chandler, AZ 85244. I bought a two-
- pack of 16 oz. bottles of the stuff several years ago at Price Club or
- Sam's and still have about half a bottle left. Al has the perfect use
- for it, where the paper label has all been removed, but the glue remains.
- De-Solv-it also works great on those price stickers that you pull off,
- and they leave a gooey mess on the product you just bought. It also
- works well if you can only tear off the smooth top layer of a label,
- leaving a rough layer of paper over the glue. Just squirt some solvent
- over the entire area and after it soaks for a bit, the whole thing can
- easily be scraped off with a fingernail. As an added bonus, it leaves a
- not-too-unpleasant orange aroma.
-
- On a totally unrelated topic, I have not seen any posts responding to a
- recent request for info on using an American Power Conversion
- uninterruptable power supply in the Philippines. I buy these by the
- hundreds--mostly the Back-UPS 400--for use in military communications
- stations worldwide. In the last two years we have not had a single
- failure of an APC UPS unit, nor has there been a power-related failure of
- any PC plugged into them.
-
- The original poster did not say if she would be using her Mac on a 120 or
- 240V line, and I don't recall what the local power requirements are in
- the Philippines, but it is important the UPS unit not only match the
- local voltage, but also the frequency, especially if it will be used
- somewhere like an overseas U.S. military base, where the voltage is often
- converted to 120V, but the frequency remains at 50Hz, instead of the 60Hz
- we use here.
-
- We attempted to install some U.S. standard UPS units on a 120V, 50Hz line
- and if I recall correctly, the technician said the UPS battery would not
- charge properly. We replaced those with models rated for 120-240V, 50-
- 60Hz and they worked fine. I also have an APC unit at the office designed
- for my Mac IIci, which matches its footprint and sits underneath the CPU.
- Never a minute's problem with it. (and since I work on a military base,
- it gets a lot of exercise from our frequent power outages) Just don't
- try to plug your laser printer into a small UPS unless its documentation
- specifically states that it is alright to do so. Hope this helps.

- Subject: Quadra 840 AV without sound ?
-
- Dear netters,
-
- I have experienced a strange thing concerning our 840 AV.
- When we got it, we would get no sound from it. After trying
- some things, one day it played sound and now, you guessed it,
- it again stopped doing so. I made sure that the volume is not
- zero, that the warning sound volume is not zero and that the
- output frequency is set to 22kHz, all to no avail. Has anyone
- ever seen this or can provide some clues what we could check else ?
-
- Many thanks in advance.

- Subject: QuickDrawGX and Printing Problems ...
-
- Hi MacUsers,
- I have a LCIII, 8mb ram and I upgraded to Mac Sys 7.5. I did not install power
- talk as I have only 8mb ram. I had numerous system errors, when I subsequently
- upgraded to WordPerfect 3.1 and windows 6.0. The printing with wp is just awful
- as I have to close everything down before printing. I get plenty not enough
- memory errors prior to closing down. I can get it to print without quickdraw
- but then why upgrade if you can not use it ??
-
- I have a stylewriter 1.
- Any suggestions ???
- 1. Should I use virtual memory with stacker?and disk doubler.
- 2. Which extensions should I definitely avoid with quickdraw??
-
- TIA
- Albert

-
- One of the primary (if not the *only*) ingredient(s) of lighter fluid - as
- well as the spot remover "Energine" - is naphtha, used primarily as a
- degreasing solvent and paint thinner. I recently bought a gallon of it,
- at a lumber yard, for $7.19, plus tax. Lighter fluid can easily run you a
- buck or more for four ounces.
-
- By wetting the labels thoroughly, and then stacking a group of disks
- together to retard solvent evaporation, the labels come off fairly well.
-
- Of course, good ventilation and avoidance of flame sources is a must.
-
- I do think that one should be very careful to keep the solvent away from
- the disk shutters, as the stuff *could* be anathema (ahem) to the magnetic
- coating and/or the substrate of the floppy itself.
